Crystals Damaged by Water
Posted by Lestari on 8th Apr 2020
Before cleansing your crystals or creating a crystal elixir, it’s important to know that some crystals can be damaged by water. Depending on the chemical composition of the crystal, water can cause rust or cracks to appear, gradually dissolve or crumble the crystal, or change the colour over time. Some crystals can even release toxins into the water.
As a general rule of thumb (with some exceptions), crystals ending with “ite” tend to dissolve in water. Generally speaking, crystals that fall below 5 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness are a softer material so should not be submerged in water. The closer to 0 on the scale they are, the more sensitive to water they are.
Below are two lists complied of the most common crystals that are considered safe and not safe to be submerged in water. Please do your own research before working with water as this is not a complete list of all crystals.

I hope this helps with your crystal healing journey. Please research your crystals before you submerge them in water for cleansing. There are crystals out there that can be damaged by water, let alone be used to create Crystal Elixirs. There is some conflicting information for some crystals, so if in doubt, it’s safer to use the alternative ways to cleanse your crystals. And if you are wanting to create a Crystal Elixir, I always recommend the indirect method such as our Crystal Water Bottles so you can use any crystal you like without worrying about potential damage or toxins.
With love and light,
